Cutting onions makes me cry (sometimes)…

Peeling, cutting, chopping, slicing raw onion releases an enzyme and amino acid which creates an irritant that burns and makes your eyes water.

If this is a problem for you then try peeling an onion under running water, chilling them in your refrigerator, use a sharp knife (cutting rather than crushing), wearing goggles helps but then again so does a gas mask.

An onion a day keeps the doctor away:

Onions contain phenolics and flavonoids that have potential anti-inflammatory, anti-cholesterol, anti-cancer and antioxidant properties.

The skins of onions contain powerful and natural anti-histamine which has shown to help hay fever sufferers.

Onions also contain Quercetin which is recognised as a potent antioxidant and onions don't have to be eaten raw to maximise their health benefits as they retains all of their powerful goodliness even after cooking.

So there, it is good to know your onions.

And lastly, if you are desperate to get rid of the smell of paint from a newly decorated room simply place a halved onion in the room.
